Phillies Promote Griff McGarry To Triple-A
The Phillies fourth-ranked prospect, Griff McGarry, is on his way to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, the team announced. Along with top prospects Andrew Painter and Mick Abel, McGarry is expected to be a key piece of the Phils’ pitching staff in the near future, and he could be in line for a late season call up this year.
McGarry, a 23-year-old San Francisco native, has shown quite well at both the High-A and Double-A levels this season. In 79.1 innings pitched, he has posted a rock solid 3.18 ERA, with a 1.13 WHIP and an outstanding 13.7 K/9. He’ll now get his first taste of Triple-A action, and if all goes well he could vie for a big league call up before the regular season is over.
The Phillies have had some starting pitching woes recently, as ace Zack Wheeler joined Zach Eflin on the Injured List, and both Noah Syndergaard and Kyle Gibson have struggled. Syndergaard and Ranger Suárez have had problems pitching deep into games, and some have speculated that McGarry could be used to piggyback games if need be.
Whether or not McGarry makes his big league debut this season, his rapid ascent through the minor leagues is welcome news for a Phillies team that has struggled mightily to develop talent in years past. With an extremely promising trio of McGarry, Abel and Painter developing nicely, the Phillies look primed to have a truly fearsome rotation in the not too distant future.
