The Phillies are off to a great start after a disappointing series with the Mets, taking the first two games of a three-game set against the Reds in Cincinnati. However, more important than the 11-4 drubbing of a hapless Reds team is the fact that Tuesday night’s win is the 10,000th in Phillies history.
After failing to score in back-to-back contests against the Mets, and scratching out a one-run win last night, the Phils came out like gangbusters on Tuesday. Darick Hall and Nick Castellanos hit back-to-back homers in the top of the third to give the Phillies an early 2-0 lead. The Reds would go back-to-back in their half of the frame, giving them a momentary one-run lead. However, a Rhys Hoskins three-run blast in the fourth put the Phils back on top for good. Matt Vierling made it 6-3 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, while a second Hoskins dinger added two more in the eighth, and Garrett Stubbs added a three-run shot of his own in the ninth.

On the mound, Kyle Gibson ran into trouble in the third with consecutive longballs from Jake Fraley and Jonathan India, but was excellent aside from that. In 6.0 total frames, he punched out 11 Reds, while surrendering six hits and walking none. Connor Brogdon and José Alvarado each hurled clean frames, and Nick Nelson allowed one run on three bloop singles to finish things off.
It was a brilliant showing from a Phillies team that has bounced back nicely from a rough Mets series. The 10,000th win in franchise history came in grandiose fashion, and the team is solidifying their claim to a playoff spot. They’ll look to complete the sweep Wednesday afternoon when Ranger Suárez takes on Nick Lodolo.
