The Phillies chances of gaining ground on the Mets were dealt a serious blow today, as second baseman Jean Segura was placed on the Injured List with a grade 1 groin strain. Segura is likely to miss three weeks with the injury. The Phillies have recalled fan-favorite Nick Maton from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.
The Phillies have seen a rash of injuries test their depth of late, with key contributors Segura, Didi Gregorius, Chase Anderson and Brandon Kintzler going down, as well as Bryce Harper held out of tonight’s starting lineup with a back ailment. Luckily, production has come from the most unlikely sources, as journeyman infielder Ronald Torreyes has done yeoman’s work filling in at shortstop, and rookie sensation Luke Williams has set the baseball world ablaze the past two weeks. Heading into this weekend’s series against the red-hot San Francisco Giants, the Phillies will need to play mistake-free baseball in order to keep pace with the Mets.
