Odubel Herrera Arrested Following Alleged Domestic Violence Incident

According to Jim Salisbury and Corey Seidman, Odubel Herrera was arrested on Monday night due to an alleged domestic violence incident involving his 20 year-old girlfriend. Herrera – 27 – was in Atlantic City. The Phillies were off on Memorial Day and the incident took place at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino. Herrera was given a summons, charged with simple assault and eventually released.

The police report stated that the victim had “visible signs of injury to her arms and neck that were sustained after being assaulted by her boyfriend, David Odubel Herrera, during a dispute”.

The league and player’s association recently came to terms on a new domestic violence policy that aims to educate about and curb assaults. The deal states that the commissioner’s office will “investigate all allegations of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse involving members of the baseball community. The Commissioner may place an accused player on paid administrative leave for up to seven days while allegations are investigated”. It also says that the commissioner will “decide on appropriate discipline, with no minimum or maximum penalty under the policy”.

It is likely that Herrera will be placed on the restricted list as the investigation unfolds. The fifth year outfielder from Venezuala is currently in the third year of a five-year, $30 million deal.

Update: The Phillies have issued an official statement on Odubel Herrera and placed him on administrative leave.
